ZUMBA ZUMBA
is a Latin inspired dance fitness class. Here is a little history of some of the
dance rhythms I use in this class:
- Merengue:
One theory says that the original Merengue was invented by a Spanish king, who
had a crippled the leg. It is danced to a even 1-2 1-2 beat with one bent knee.
In dance, the bent knee transfers to a pushed out hip.
- Salsa:
Cuba is one of the cultures that created this fun and fast dance. Salsa as it
is danced in North America today, however, was shaped in New York, Florida, and
L.A.
- Cumbia:
This dance of Colombia is also called "Colombian Salsa". In recently
years, a new style has been made popular in Mexico City, Mexico, called "Chilango
Cumbia".
- Bachata:
Bachata is a popular music from the Dominican Republic since the early 20th Century.
The Bachata dance became widely popular in the US only in the last two to three
years.
- Cha-cha-cha:
This dance is more familiar to many people than other Latin dances. That is because
although it has a Cuban root, after it was introduced to Europe it also became
a standardized ballroom dance. Cha-cha-cha has a split fourth beat, counting 2,
3, 4-and-1. Or Step, Step, Cha-Cha-Cha.
- Tango:
Originated in Argentina and Uruguay in the late 19th Century, Tango is now danced
all over the world in many different styles. Although it is generally true that
"it takes two to Tango", with clever choreography, Tango can be part
of ZUMBA and danced without a partner. It takes a group to Tango!
- Reggaeton:
It first became popular in Puerto Rico. Its music has a heavy Jamaica influence
but also mixed with other Latin dance music, such as salsa. It is fast, energetic,
urban, and contemporary. Some call it the Latin Hip Hop or Reggae Rap.
Zumba
vs. Dancing vs. Aerobatics Zumba
is fitness. Compared to social or performance dancing, Zumba steps are simpler
and more repetitive. So they can be easily followed by most people and allow individuals
to adapt to their own fitness level. In that sense, Zumba is a type of aerobic
exercise. But what makes Zumba different is that it uses real dance music, which
often has an interesting polyrhythm that can literally keep you on your feet.
Standard aerobics music, on the other hand, while simpler to count, can be boring.
